The King's hopes of seeing his estranged son and his grandchildren have been dealt a huge blow after Prince Harry announced he would not bring his wife or children to London over fears for their safety13:05, 05 Jul 2026The King has no plans to alter his diary this week as a meeting with his grandchildren alongside his son Prince Harry looks increasingly unlikely.‌The Duke of Sussex is due to arrive in the UK tomorrow (MON), but will do so alone after deciding that it was not safe enough to travel to London with his wife Meghan and their two children. The King was looking forward to a potential meeting with his grandchildren, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, but looks set to have his hopes dashed following the duke’s dramatic U-turn.‌Meghan, 44, has not visited the UK since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022 alongside Harry, while the children have not been here since June of the same year, when the Sussexes visited for the late Queen's platinum jubilee.‌The King has only met Archie a handful of times when Harry and Meghan lived in the UK and only met Lilibet once in the summer of 2022.Harry and Meghan announced their full UK schedule late last month, including taking part in a range of joint engagements and meetings in the capital and Birmingham.‌The couple were forced into an embarrassing change of plans just 24 hours later after they received notice from the Home Office that they would not qualify for taxpayer funded security for the visit.The Sussexes were stripped of their right to publicly funded security when in the UK following their decision to quit their royal roles and set up home in the United States in March 2020.Harry, 41, is understood to have been enraged and upset at the decision, while government sources told The Mirror they believed he was attempting to force the Home Office’s hand by announcing his plans publicly ahead of time.‌Royal sources have described the drama surrounding the Sussexes’ travel plans as “tiresome”, while confirming that the King has not altered plans for a range of engagements and private meetings every day next week.Palace insiders also suggested there was irritation that Harry had failed to communicate his travel plans or send a response to the invitation of staying at Buckingham Palace.Another source said it would now be “immensely difficult” for Harry to arrange a meeting between the King and his son due to the last minute changes. The King has public engagements and private meetings every day of the coming week.‌One insider said: “This whole business has become incredibly tiresome and it remains unresolved less than 24 hours before the Duke is supposed to be arriving. The King takes his public work incredibly seriously and there will be no last minute deviations to his plans.”On Saturday, it emerged that Meghan and the children would not travel to London this week, over Harry’s continued concerns for their safety.‌After being offered the chance to stay in a royal residence to allay his security fears, Buckingham Palace has still not received notice of his intention to accept the invitation.Harry has previously turned down an offer to stay at Buckingham Palace over fears the accommodation was not secure enough. A report commissioned by the Sussexes' private security team found Harry was the focus of six terrorist plots, five of which originated in the UK.The risk assessment, published by ITN News, set out dozens of threats, including an al-Qaeda document calling for his assassination. It was sent to the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec), which determines which senior politicians and royals receive police protection paid for by the Home Office.‌The Sussexes are believed to have spent the last week at their holiday home in Portugal, while their private security team continue to try and devise a plan for them to travel to and across the UK.It appears that the family will at least spend part of the week, if Meghan and the children do make the trip to the UK at all, at Harry’s uncle Earl Spencer’s Althorp home in Northamptonshire.The family are believed to have been spending the last week at their holiday home in Portugal.‌As well as Harry's public engagements this week, the Sussexes have reportedly made plans - subject to security logistics - to spend time with friends outside London.On Tuesday and Wednesday, Harry is due to attend engagements involving the Invictus Games Foundation in London.‌He is also set to receive the judgement of his long running court case against Associated Newspapers, publisher of the Daily Mail and Mail Online, on Tuesday, which could result in the duke making a public statement during his trip which he hoped would focus on his charity work.On Thursday and Friday, Harry is due in Birmingham, firstly in his capacity as Patron of the children’s charity WellChild and then at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) for the Invictus anniversary event.Royal sources have confirmed the Prince and Princess of Wales, who have not spoken to Harry and Meghan since the late Queen's funeral, have no intention of meeting the Harry or his family during their potential stay.Article continues belowOn Sunday, in his capacity as ambassador for the charity Scotty’s Little Soldiers, the duke will attend a summer festival in Warwickshire - just an hour away from Althorp House, where his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, is buried.It has been suggested that the Sussexes could meet the King at one of his country residences, either Highgrove in Gloucestershire or Sandringham in Norfolk on Saturday, although a request has not been made.Buckingham Palace did not comment.
