Acknowledging the country's turbulent history, Clinton quoted former President Abraham Lincoln, saying America's journey had been, in Lincoln's words, "piled high with difficulty."

Former United States President, Bill Clinton has warned that American democracy is facing serious threats, accusing the country's current leadership of undermining democratic institutions, weaponising government and deepening national divisions as the United States marked its 250th Independence Day.

In a statement issued on Saturday to commemorate America's 250th anniversary, the former US president reflected on the nation's democratic journey while urging Americans to defend the values upon which the country was founded.

Clinton described the Declaration of Independence as a defining moment in history, saying, "Two hundred and fifty years ago in Philadelphia, our Founders embarked on a radical experiment and declared a new nation rooted in the ideal of equality, with an elected government charged to advance life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."

He added, "Since then, our government of, by, and for the people has become the longest-lasting continuous democracy in the history of the world."
