EUGENE, Ore. — American Nikki Hiltz blazed to a first-place finish in the women’s mile Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic track meet, surging ahead of three-time Olympic gold medalist Faith Kipyegon down the stretch to post the best time in the world this season.Hiltz crossed the finish line in 4 minutes, 17.49 seconds, as Kipyegon lost a race at a mile or 1,500 meters for the first time in five years. She ended up finishing third at 4:17.80, behind fellow Kenyan Dorcus Ewoi, who ran a personal best 4:17.62.While Saturday’s victory was far from the 2024 Olympian’s first, it carried a little more weight in the wake of this week’s Supreme Court decision upholding state bans on transgender women and girls competing against cisgender women and girls in sports.Hiltz competes in women’s events, but identifies as non-binary and transgender, using they/them pronouns. Hiltz said their win Saturday “totally” meant more — and not just because they finally got the opportunity to out-kick Kipyegon.“I wasn’t surprised, but I was obviously still disappointed (in the Supreme Court ruling),” Hiltz said. “For me, I want to show that trans people can be in sport, be affirmed in their gender. We’re not these big, scary things.”
