England head coach Thomas Tuchel says that Jarell Quansah is “fully available” to feature in their World Cup last-16 game against Mexico, but Reece James still needs to be assessed.James (hamstring) and Quansah (ankle) both missed England’s 2-1 round-of-32 victory against DR Congo through injury. Tuchel said ahead of that match that Quansah was “a bit ahead” of James in their race for fitness, and both were getting “closer and closer”.The Athletic previously reported that James’ injury is not thought to be serious, and he is expected to play a significant part in the tournament, should England progress. He started the tournament-opening 4-2 win against Croatia and subsequent 0-0 draw with Ghana.“You saw that Jarell trained, Jarell trained fully, is fully available,” Tuchel said at his pre-match press conference on Saturday. “Reece can maybe make it onto the bench, he needs a last assessment from the doctors and medical opinion if this makes sense.”Tuchel, meanwhile, denied reports that the England team would use viagra to combat the altitude in Mexico City.Tottenham Hotspur’s Djed Spence started at right-back against DR Congo. After he was substituted for Eberechi Eze on 70 minutes, with his side 1-0 down, Declan Rice completed the match on the right side of England’s defence.Despite primarily playing club football for Bayer Leverkusen at centre-back, Quansah is regarded as a right-back option by Tuchel. He started in England’s 2-0 win against Panama, but was forced off on 63 minutes after going down with an ankle problem. After Newcastle United full-back Tino Livramento had to withdraw from the squad through injury after it had been named in late May, Tuchel called up Chelsea’s Trevoh Chalobah in his place, and in doing so, said Quansah was “freed up” to feature at right-back.James made 29 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea during the 2025-26 campaign, his best return since the 2020-21 season, following several years of injury disruption.
