‘REPRESENTATIVE RECORD’:

The 400kg stainless steel cylinder containing items from 50 states and five US territories is not supposed to be opened for 250 years

AFP, WASHINGTON

Americans living in 2276 would get a taste of what their ancestors today think best represents the nation thanks to a time capsule. The 400kg stainless steel cylinder was to go into the ground yesterday, as the nation marked its 250th birthday, not far from where the Declaration of Independence was signed in Philadelphia. It is not supposed to be opened for another 250 years, in 2276.

The America250 time capsule, left, and the bell jar that would fit on top of it are pictured in the machine shop where they were created in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in a photo released on June 23.
