Help people obtain acceptable documentary proof for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, issue Permanent Residence Certificates, and hold consultations with civil society organisations. These were some of the demands put forth before the Telangana government and Election Commission of India (ECI) by the Telangana Voter Rights Forum to prevent exclusion of eligible voters under the SIR undertaken by the ECI.Permanent Residence Certificate issued by gram panchayats, urban local bodies is recognised by the Election Commission as an acceptable document for the SIR.“The SIR is designed with evil intention. The government is going to choose voters. We have seen unfriendly apps and websites but this is ten times worse than that. The Booth Level Officer is king or queen who can decide whether you will vote in the next election or not,” said former IAS officer Akunuri Murali. “But even the BLOs don’t know how to fill up the form. No democratic country has made it so difficult for its voters to vote. This is a first for a democracy,” said Mr. Murali. At the meeting called at Sundaryya Vignana Kendram on Saturday afternoon, civil society members as well NGOs and citizens shared their thoughts on what they have been encountering with the SIR process. Hyma, who represented Garbage Collectors Union, said that the sanitation workers and others - who begin their work early in they day - have not been able to meet the BLOs as their timings did not match.“The EC should launch an intensive multi-lingual public awareness campaign in Telugu, English and Urdu through newspapers, public hoarding and social media. Voter helplines should function from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. so that people from all walks of life can reach out,” said former OU professor Padmaja Shaw, who demanded an extension of the SIR timeline by three months so that all eligible voters remain on rolls.
