Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated CG Semi's Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility in Sanand, Gujarat, marking the commissioning of India's third semiconductor manufacturing plant and a key milestone in the country's efforts to build a domestic chip ecosystem.The facility is expected to boost India's semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, strengthen the electronics supply chain and reduce dependence on imported chips as the government pushes to position the country as a global semiconductor hub.Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw has earlier said the inauguration marked a significant step in India's semiconductor journey, adding that the sector had remained a national priority for decades and had gained momentum under Prime Minister Modi's leadership.He also highlighted the pace at which the semiconductor ecosystem has taken shape, noting that the first semiconductor facility in Sanand was inaugurated on February 28, the second on March 31, and the third has now been inaugurated on Friday.Separately, Vaishnaw said work on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail corridor is nearly 80% complete, with the first operational stretch between Surat and Bilimora expected to be inaugurated in 2027.
