Alan Shearer believes that Thomas Tuchel must make three changes to his England XI for the trip to Mexico in the World Cup Round of 16 this weekend11:14, 04 Jul 2026Updated 11:14, 04 Jul 2026Alan Shearer has criticised Thomas Tuchel and called for the England boss to drop Djed Spence, Marcus Rashford and Noni Madueke for Sunday's Round of 16 tie against Mexico. Fresh off the back of Wednesday's 2-1 win against DR Congo in the Round of 32, the Three Lions continue their World Cup adventure with a trip to the iconic Azteca Stadium.‌Although England did enough to beat Congo in the end, it's safe to say the Three Lions need to be much improved if they want to get past an in-form Mexican side who have won each of their opening four matches at the tournament without conceding a single goal.‌As well as that, the game is set to be played at a high altitude (2,240m above sea level) and in front of more than 80,000 Mexican supporters, making England's task even more difficult.‌And former England forward Shearer has demanded that Tuchel make three changes to his starting XI to face Mexico as the Three Lions attempt to navigate a difficult-looking last-16 tie.Shearer is hoping for Spence to be replaced by John Stones, Anthony Gordon to take Rashford's spot, and Bukayo Saka to come in for Madueke on the right-hand side.Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: "I would make changes to the England side against Mexico. I would perhaps put [Ezri] Konsa at right back and I'd play John Stones in the middle. Konsa right back, [Nico] O'Reilly left back, [Marc] Guehi and Stones at centre-half. [Declan] Rice, [Elliot] Anderson, [Jude] Bellingham, [Harry] Kane, Gordon, Saka.‌"Again, I think it's very much similar to what I said. I don't think the wide men worked against DR Congo. I think Anthony Gordon more than played his part in both goals. So, when the manager puts you on as a sub, he's asking you to go on and impact the game. And Anthony Gordon certainly did that. So, I think he deserves again to start.World Cup: Security tight at England's team hotel in Mexico City ‌"Whoever Tuchel has started on the wings haven’t affected the game the same way as the subs have and again, he switched those around, which tells you whatever he's done hasn't worked. But I agree with you, the players that have started out wide, it hasn't worked for them."Mexico are formidable at their home stadium, having lost just two competitive games there since 1966. Although England are marginal favourites according to the bookmakers, Guehi believes that Mexico have the edge going into the tie."We know they're a good team and they've got the fans on their side, so it'll be going into the cauldron," Guehi said on Friday. "But it'll be a fun test. I'd say they're kind of favourites. They're at home and they know the environment a lot better. They haven't conceded so far and have got a perfect record.Article continues below"You come to these competitions to play against top teams, in top atmospheres.
