Shane van Gisbergen got his revenge at Sonoma after a collision took him out of the Anduril 250. But he’ll still have a hard time making the Chase after what happened at San Diego. Also at Sonoma, Denny Hamlin finally overtook the No. 1 spot in the Cup standings, and the oval master is set up for success from here forward. As always, Jeff Gluck and Jordan Bianchi answer our most pressing questions and make predictions about the upcoming race. The eero 400 at Chicagoland Speedway is Sunday at 6 p.m. ET on TNT, MRN and HBO Max.Race winner odds for the eero 400Well, it finally happened. Denny Hamlin overtook Tyler Reddick for the No. 1 spot in the points race, on race/street courses no less. Obviously Reddick had some bad luck, and Hamlin did just enough, but here we are. While it seems Hamlin’s to lose, which of these drivers comes out on top, and how would each of them achieve it?Jeff: Hamlin has so much momentum right now, and, as you mentioned, you would have never imagined he would take the points lead away from Reddick after two road/street courses. It’s tempting to think he will pull away, and he might. I would expect Hamlin to be strong on just about all the remaining tracks except the unpredictable superspeedways, while Reddick should be a top-five guy but not always in contention to win each week. Will Reddick be favored over Hamlin at, say, New Hampshire? I’d guess not. That said, there’s plenty of racing to go, and we just saw what happens to drivers when they have bad luck or mechanical woes. So it would certainly be a mistake to simply call it done and hand the regular-season title to Hamlin. They still have to race for it.Jordan: It just seems so unwise to bet against Hamlin right now. What is particularly favorable for him is the remaining regular season schedule, with several of his best tracks left, which should allow him to lengthen his points lead over Reddick and claim the No. 1 seed entering the Chase. But Reddick shouldn’t yet be counted out because his recent downturn is more due to rotten luck than substandard performance. In three of the past four races, he was swept into a wreck without fault (Michigan), had a flat tire late while challenging for the win (San Diego) and suffered a mechanical failure last week at Sonoma. Had any of these things not occurred, Reddick is still the points leader. You wrote about the complicated relationship between Corey Heim and Carson Hocevar. Do you expect to see any drama on the track at Chicago? Where do you expect these two young drivers to finish?Jeff: I like the odds of them at least racing around each other at some point Sunday, mainly because I can see them somewhere around 7th to 12th. Heim told me last week they’re going to race hard and that if they run into each other every now and then by mistake … it’ll happen. So he’s not running from it, and neither is Hocevar. I personally love the intrigue of it, especially since neither guy is actively out there trying to put a lid on the talk at this point.
