England face a daunting task as they come up against Mexico in the last-16 of the World Cup at the Azteca and a few members of the Three Lions squad have shared their thoughts on the clash10:28, 04 Jul 2026England star Marc Guehi believes the Azteca makes Mexico favourites for their upcoming World Cup showdown. The Three Lions will take on the Central American side on Monday morning in the last-16 after squeezing past DR Congo. The clash represents a significant challenge for Thomas Tuchel ’s side given they will be playing the game at high altitude - the stadium sitting over 7,000 feet above sea level.Mexico are also formidable at their home stadium, having lost just two competitive games at the arena since 1966. England defender Guehi believes that those elements will give Mexico an edge during the game but it is a challenge that the Three Lions are relishing.“We know they're a good team and they've got the fans on their side, so it'll be going into the cauldron,” said the 25-year-old. “But it'll be a fun test. I'd say they're kind of favourites. They're at home and they know the environment a lot better. They haven't conceded so far and have got a perfect record.“You come to these competitions to play against top teams, in top atmospheres. It's a match we're all looking forward to.”Asked further about playing at the Azteca by BBC Sport, he added: “It is to be honest. I was told all of the legends have played there, Pele and Maradona. Like really one of the great stadiums in football to be able to play there is a real blessing.“I’d say Mexico are probably favourites. The fact that they’re doing so well in the competition and they’re on home soil, playing at the Azteca, they’ll have the fans behind them. It will be a big challenge for us but one that we’re up for and ready for.”Guehi is not the only one to have shared his thoughts on the upcoming game. Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has also spoken out but believes that neither the altitude nor Mexico’s previous record will have much of a bearing on the final result."It doesn't matter," he said in a press conference. "It's a game of football at the end of the day, and it might be a small adjustment that we need to make."But, in the end, it doesn't change our outlook on the game, and what we're trying to do. Whatever happens, however the game plays out, we're going to try to come out on top."Rashford added: "Listen, it's a game of football. We've all been playing football since we were kids, and we've played in different environments, different atmospheres, some easier than others, some terrible to play in and disgusting."But it's up to us to try and find a way to come out on top. And that's what the focus is. Sometimes you need the player next to you, and the player next to him.“But listen, it is all the same. We have to work together, work as a unit and try to bring as close to our best as we can, and we'll be fine."Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
