The World Cup is on to the round of 16 starting Saturday. Tournament favorite France is among the quartet of teams in action. The French are, of course, heavy favorites to advance against Paraguay, while co-hosts Canada try to keep their best-ever run going against Morocco. Here’s a look at the odds and storylines for both matches plus some picks from our betting staff.Canada-MoroccoTime: 1 p.m. ETTV: Fox (English), Telemundo (Spanish)Venue: NRG Stadium, HoustonCanada is already in uncharted territory. The co-hosts entered this tournament without a single point in a World Cup and are now in the final 16. To go any further would be a massive surprise.Meanwhile, Morocco is looking to prove its run to the semifinals in 2022 wasn’t a fluke. The Atlas Stars have gradually gained respect with more and more impressive results in recent years, including at the youth levels, but this match represents something different. Morocco’s three knockout wins in the last two World Cups all came as an underdog. The Atlas Stars were significant underdogs against Spain and Portugal in 2022 before winning. Even though Monday’s victory against the Netherlands was tight in the odds, Morocco was still an underdog.Saturday’s match against Canada puts Morocco in the position of being the favorite, and the clear one at that. Morocco is -265 to advance, while Canada is +205. The implied odds put this at roughly 70-30 for Morocco to make the quarterfinals.Canada has already reached or surpassed most expectations. The only thing the Canadians didn’t do was win their group, which would’ve meant a match in this round would take place in Vancouver, instead of having to travel to Houston. That didn’t matter when Canada beat South Africa in California last round, but the Canadians won’t have a red-clad crowd urging them on in the same numbers in Texas.Alphonso Davies made his first appearance of the tournament against South Africa, subbing on in the 75th minute. He seemed to energize the Canada attack in what was an otherwise dull game. Can Canada’s star play more this round with another six days to get fit?Paraguay-FranceTime: 5 p.m. ETTV: Fox (English), Telemundo (Spanish)Venue: Lincoln Financial Field, PhiladelphiaIt seems like it’s possible to score on this France team. It doesn’t seem like it’s possible to keep Les Bleus from scoring at least two or three goals.Kylian Mbappé is a scoring machine right now, Ousmane Dembélé had a hat trick two games ago and Michael Olise could actually be France’s most important player. The arguments for Mbappé and Dembélé as crucial stars for France are more obvious. Mbappé has already scored six goals, including two against Sweden last round, and Dembélé is the reigning Ballon d’Or winner. But even stars at the level of Mbappé and Dembélé need the ball to produce, and Olise has been giving them chances in abundance. Olise leads the tournament with five assists, including two against Sweden. The point is, to stop France, you have to stop not just one or two superstars but an entire attacking lineup of them. Good luck.Paraguay endured tons of pressure and got a fortunate call in extra time on a disallowed goal to beat Germany in penalties last round. The South Americans won’t want to sit back and absorb pressure from the French for an entire game.Based on what we’ve seen so far, to beat France, you’ll have to score at least two or three goals, not hope to hold them to one or none. Keep in mind this is a Paraguay team that gave up four to the United States earlier this tournament. This is why the French are such overwhelming favorites to advance (-2000) and also favored to win the tournament.Best betsDan Santaromita: France over 2.5 goals, +110 (BetMGM)It feels aggressive taking any team to score three goals at this stage of a World Cup, but France is a machine right now. Plus, I don’t think Paraguay is any good (and probably didn’t deserve to advance against Germany). The only fear is France takes its foot off the gas a bit with a two-goal lead and simply doesn’t find the third, but I think it’s more likely than not Les Bleus get there.Mike Hume: Morocco over 1.5 goals in regular time, +106 (FanDuel)It’s been a fantastic World Cup for Canada, but it ends against Morocco, and I believe it will end rather emphatically. If I were a little braver, I’d probably push the over even higher, but I tend to think the fireworks will slow down once Morocco goes up by two, and I’m not sure Canada will hit the score sheet.Dean Jones: Michael Olise assist, +170 (DraftKings)This feels like printing money. Olise is the top assist scorer at the World Cup so far with five and is up against a Paraguay team who conceded four goals to USA in their first game of the tournament. Okay, they have improved since then and shocked Germany in the last round on penalties, but France are a different animal. They are currently scoring at least three goals per game, and Olise is one of the most exciting talents on the stage.Vik Chokshi: Morocco to win in regulation, -115 (DraftKings)I love watching this Morocco team and am rooting for them to make a deep run. I agree with Mike’s thoughts on this game but am just playing it a little differently. I like Morocco to take care of business in regulation against a Canada team that is just happy to still be standing.Picks recordsUnitsRecordDean1.616-8Mike1.5110-13Dan0.111-12Vik-0.2813-13
