Egyptian fans celebrate their team's victory in the 2026 Fifa World Cup Round of 32 against Australia in Al-Shorouk City, east of Cairo.
Egypt will share the weight of a continent with Morocco and carry a heavy burden as they head into the Fifa World Cup round of 16 as the only two African nations left in the tournament.
But knowing that an entire nation — and hopefully an entire continent — is firmly behind them could make that immense load a little easier to bear. Scenes of pure jubilation swept across Cairo after the Pharaohs edged out Australia in a dramatic penalty shootout to book their place in the FIFA World Cup round of 16.
Within minutes of the final spot-kick, thousands upon thousands of passionate supporters poured into the Egyptian capital's streets, waving national flags, lighting flares, and singing long into the night.
From the iconic Tahrir Square to the bustling districts across the city, roads quickly became rivers of red, white, and black as families, young fans, and elderly supporters celebrated one of the country's greatest footballing achievements.
