Bottom Line Up Front
Today’s verdict: All five surviving Latin American nations reach the World Cup’s last 16 — Argentina survived a Cape Verde scare and Colombia beat Ghana — as the knockout round opens this weekend and Peru’s president-elect is formally proclaimed.
Five through to the last 16. Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico and Paraguay all reached the Round of 16, five of the region’s seven starters. Argentina needed extra time to survive Cape Verde 3-2.
The knockouts open this weekend. Paraguay play France today, Brazil meet Norway on Sunday, and Mexico host England at the Azteca on Monday. Argentina and Colombia play Tuesday.
Peru’s president-elect proclaimed. The electoral board formally proclaimed Keiko Fujimori on Friday, and her rival rejects the result. Nothing changes for residents before the July 28 handover.
