Avinash Parshotam, left, also known by his monastic name Rishikumar Satyanand, with his legal representative, Anand Nepaul.
The Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA) of South Africa has upheld a high court ruling that overturned the Divine Life Society's disciplinary action against Avinash Parshotam, a renunciant member.
This decision highlights the importance of natural justice and proper board composition within religious organisations.
The SCA case emerged from an appeal by the Society against a decision by the Durban High Court in favour of Parshotam, also known by his monastic name Rishikumar Satyanand.
Parshotam challenged the Society after his membership was revoked and he was told that he would need to vacate his residence at the ashram.
