The first international rugby test match between the All Blacks and France at Christchurch's new Te Kaha stadium is expected to bring an estimated $8 million in economic benefits to the city.Seats for Saturday night's match sold out within four hours, with 5000 temporary seats installed at the northern end of the stadium to increase capacity to 30,000 for the first test of the Nations Championship.Council-owned stadium operator Venues Ōtautahi paid an incentive fee for the All Blacks to play in Christchurch, but said the money came out of its operating profit, rather than ratepayers' pockets.Chief executive Caroline Harvie-Teare would not disclose how much was paid, but said it was a traditional way of attracting matches to the city."The investment is certainly worth the return," she said. "We just can't wait to see them run out under the roof."Let this be the beginning of their fortress here in the south."Harvie-Teare said a third of ticketholders were coming from outside the region."That will deliver about $8 million in estimated economic benefit to the city over the weekend."Mason Lattimore, who co-owns Kaiser Brew Garden and The Loft Bar, said the return of the All Blacks had been a long time coming."What I'm most proud about and most excited about is having people from out of town coming to Christchurch, so we can really show off, and hopefully we can represent the city in a good way," he said.Te Kaha has transformed Christchurch as a sporting destination.RNZ / Stan McFerrierThe bars were well stocked with beer and staff were all hands on deck for a busy weekend."The streets are humming with people," he said. "The bars were already heaving well on Thursday night, and hopefully people will stick around on Sunday and make a day of it."Riverside Market general manager Jo Southen said there was a great energy and excitement in the city."It's fantastic for the region," she said. "The stadium's really been a great boost for us, particularly its timing heading into winter."The All Blacks and with people staying, coming from outside of town, it will just bring the level of vibrancy into the market for this weekend, which is really exciting."Riverside Market will host a poster-making and face-painting session with NZ Rugby before the game.
