The fraud involves a work platform that forces victims to pay to access their wages, but does not allow them to withdraw even after sending the payment.
An online “work task” scam that lures people into shelling out fees for jobs they don’t get paid for is being investigated by Toronto police.
Police received reports of fake online job postings for a “home employment opportunity,” police said in a news release. Once a victim expresses interest, they are instructed to create an account on a “fraudulent work platform” with a system for rating employee performance.
The alarming reports, both made on Monday, are believed to be part of a courier fraud operation.
Police say they have received a number of reports of these scams in the last six months.
