Thousands of fans packed Centre Court to watch Novak Djokovic continue his pursuit of a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam title on Friday. But for one couple in the stands, the biggest moment of the afternoon had nothing to do with tennis. As Djokovic took on Alexandre Rinderknech in his third-round clash, Jonathan Clement dropped to one knee and asked girlfriend Juliet Berner to marry him – recreating a remarkable family tradition exactly 21 years after his own parents got engaged on the very same court.Speaking to the Daily Mail moments after Juliet said yes, the 38-year-old energy consultant revealed the touching story behind his proposal.'This place is the holy grail. My mum got engaged here 21 years ago today in this court. I have been planning this for about a month.'I was so nervous. I didn't plan anything specifically that I was going to say but it was the easiest decision I have ever made. She is perfect.'The proposal was a complete surprise for Juliet, 39, an academic tutor for A-Level students and lifelong Wimbledon regular.'I had no idea it was going to happen today, I thought maybe later in the summer but this was perfect.' Novak Djokovic has become quite the matchmaker - as a second proposal has now taken place at one of his Wimbledon games this week As the Serbian player got ready to face off France's Arthur Rinderknech, Jonathan Clement popped the question to Juliet BernerFor Juliet, there could hardly have been a more fitting setting.'I love tennis, and I'm a huge Djokovic fan. I grew up round the corner and my grandma lives just up the road so I have been coming here forever but it is Johnny's first time.'The couple's love story is an unlikely one. Although they had known each other for around three-and-a-half years, they only became a couple ten months ago after reconnecting in Portugal, where they both now live.Ironically, they met not through tennis but through its often-mocked cousin, padel.'We actually met playing padel in the Algave, in Portugal, which is where we live. Which is quite funny because amongst tennis players, playing padel is a bit taboo', they joked.'We had the same padel coach who introduced us. But then he [Jonathan] is also a padel coach so he started coaching me and yeh we just fell in love from there.'Their relationship blossomed quickly, with Jonathan coaching Juliet on the padel court while she returned the favour by teaching him yoga. Jonathan chose to propose with his grandmother's engagement ring after discovering it was almost identical to one Juliet had once described as her dream ring The newlyweds beamed in the stands as the delighted Juliet - appropriately sporting a white dress - said yesBoth had also made life-changing decisions to swap London for Portugal after Jonathan left behind what he described as the chaos of the capital, while Juliet walked away from a decade-long career as an NHS doctor after becoming exhausted by the demands of the profession. The proposal itself carried another deeply personal touch.Jonathan chose to propose with his grandmother's engagement ring after discovering it was almost identical to one Juliet had once described as her dream ring.'It was actually my grandmother's ring. So I just had to adjust it slightly. My grandmother has dementia, so I actually got the ring off of my grandfather and my mother who were so excited.'Also before this Jules had described a ring and it was literally an exact match to my grandmother's so it was just perfect.'I wanted to ask her family for their blessing and sadly her father passed away when she was 20. But I spoke to her mother and brother in Hong Kong and they were all on board.'Within minutes of the proposal, their phones were buzzing.'We have been inundated with messages from everyone who has clearly seen it online, which is so funny. But we are just so happy.'The newly-engaged couple are already looking ahead to the wedding and said Oxford, where Juliet studied at university, is among the locations they are considering. It's not the first time that romance took centre stage on the court amid this Championship, which kicked off on Monday. On day one of the action, the seven-time Wimbledon champ demanded a wedding invitation after a man in the stands got down on one knee.Djokovic saw the proposal during a break in play and gave the couple the thumbs-up before telling them: 'I want an invitation to the wedding.'They returned the thumbs-up back from the stands. The incident has since gone viral, attracting tens of thousands of views online. 'He is such a sweet man,' one person wrote on Wimbledon's official Instagram post.'I hope he gets one and goes, it would be awesome,' another said.'Djokovic asking for a wedding invite is peak Novak,' a third person wrote.Wedding proposals are common at big sporting events.A memorable incident involving Steffi Graf occurred in 1996, five years before she married Andre Agassi. She was proposed to by a fan at Wimbledon, to which she asked: 'How much money do you have?'Djokovic himself had a marriage proposal from a fan at the 2025 Australian Open. The fan yelled out 'marry me, Novak' to which he replied: 'Sorry, mate, I have a wife. We can have a drink, though.'Djokovic has been married to Jelena since 2014, with whom he has two children, Stefan and Tara. The 24-time Grand Slam champion beat China's Wu Yibing in the first round 6-4, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 to set up an encounter with Stefanos Tsitsipas. The proposal was a complete surprise for Juliet, 39, an academic tutor for A-Level students and lifelong Wimbledon regularAfter the match, which was watched by Sir David Beckham, Djokovic was interviewed on Centre Court and said it 'didn't feel like a first-round match'.'It felt really challenging for me today. Wu deserves a huge round of applause for his performance,' he said.'He put me under a lot of pressure, I never faced him before, I knew he loves hitting the ball flat and aggressively from the back of the court, but he definitely surprised me with the level of every shot in his game. At some point, he didn't have a weakness.'It's lucky he missed that overhead on break point, I probably should have lost that fourth set, he had lots of break points. On this surface, this kind of match is decided in a few shots and thankfully I have experience of the last 20-plus years.'Djokovic was booed as he played an imaginary violin with his racquet at the end of the match as Wu left to an ear-splitting ovation. The Grand Slam legend, 39, is trying to become the oldest Wimbledon men's singles champion since the Open era began in 1968. Roger Federer was 35 when he defeated Marin Cilic in straight sets in 2017.
