But, as spotted by AFTVNews, the company recently launched a new version of an existing tablet with a slight upgrade.You can now pick up an Amazon Fire HD (2023) with 4GB of RAM for $155. Earlier models only came with 3GB.For now, you don’t have a lot of configuration options if you want that extra RAM. Amazon offers a model with 4GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and lock screen ads. If you want 64GB of storage you’ll either need to make do with 3GB of memory or choose a different tablet. And for some reason, if you want to disable the ads on the lock screen, you’ll apparently have to do that after your tablet has been delivered, as there’s no option to purchase the tablet without them.The 4GB/32GB version of the tablet costs about $15 more than the base price for a 3GB model. Otherwise, the two tablets are identical.Both feature 10 inch, 1920 x 1200 pixel displays and MediaTek MT7176A processors with two Arm Cortex-A76 performance CPU cores, six Cortex-A55 efficiency cores, and Mali-G52 2EE MC2 graphics. The tablet isn’t exactly a speed demon, but it’s a nice step up from the Fire HD 8, which only has efficiency cores.Other features include a USB 2.0 Type-C port, a 3.5mm audio jack, microSD card reader, 5MP front and rear cameras, and support for WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.3. The tablet ships with Fire OS 8, which is based on Android 11.Why release a new version with more RAM out of the blue? Amazon hasn’t issued a press release or anything, but AFTVNews speculates that the RAM shortage may be limiting the availability of the memory that Amazon had been using up until now, making it easier to source a 4GB solution for the time being. That seems like a reasonable guess to me, and it’s also the first sign we’ve seen in a while that Amazon is still interested in manufacturing new tablets and not just selling through remaining inventory (select models like the Fire 7 and Fire Max 11 have been out of stock for months).Amazon’s slow pace of hardware and software updates for the platform, combined with the company’s move away from Android to Vega OS for recent Fire TV devices makes me wonder if there’s much of a future in Fire tablet hardware. But the fact that that Amazon released this modest update suggests that its not done with Fire tablets just yet.
