The Hawks bring 30 accused to court over alleged financial misconduct linked to eThekwini contracts.

Sixteen businessmen and women, along with 14 companies, have been summoned to appear before the Durban Specialised Commercial Crimes Court next week on charges relating to alleged tax fraud and tax administration violations involving more than R27 million.

The accused are expected to appear in court between July 7 and 10, following an investigation into alleged tax-related irregularities involving service providers contracted by eThekwini Municipality.

The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) said the court appearances form part of an intensified crackdown on fraud, corruption and tax non-compliance within local government procurement systems.

"The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks), in its ongoing efforts to combat fraud and corruption within local government, has intensified its enforcement action during the current tax season," the Hawks said.
