A service station visit can be the highlight of a road trip and a much-needed rest, but quality can vary massively. Here are some of the best places in the UK for a pit stop and refuel08:26, 03 Jul 2026When you're on a long road trip, there's nothing like spotting a sign for a service station. It's a feeling akin to finding an oasis in the desert, and means you can finally have a wee, grab a coffee, or maybe even stop for lunch. While service stations in the UK used to be fairly basic affairs, usually involving terrible canteens, many of them have now improved to offer a range of services for modern travellers. From EV chargers to places to walk the dog, you'll find plenty of practical amenities, as well as baffling retail decisions, such as phone case stores.People often have strong opinions about service stations, which is why commercial leasing firm Northgate Vehicle Hire has compiled data to identify the best stops for summer road trips ahead of the school holidays. It looked at data including parking prices, amount of green spaces and facilities such as the number of electric charging points to put together its list. Coming out on top was Exeter, a service station on the M5 close to the medieval city, which is a popular spot for holidaymakers driving down to southern Devon or Cornwall."Located on the M5, the service station is the ideal stop for holidaymakers heading to the South West this summer. With 36 electric charging points, 13 food and drink outlets and free parking for up to two hours, it’s the perfect spot to recharge before visiting some of the region's key attractions," the rankings note."Whether you’re heading to explore one of Exeter’s medieval cathedrals or on route to explore the dramatic scenery of Dartmoor National Park, the service station is a convenient break before your adventure begins."Reviews of the service station from the public have been mixed. One said: "All the essential shops are on site, all laid out in a well-organised space. The toilets are clean, which is always appreciated."But a recent unhappy visitor complained: "Disgusting!! Foyer bins/recycling overflowing. Tables covered in litter. Visiting at 2am, quick pit stop mid journey. All bins are overflowing."Coming in second place was Newport Pagnell Southbound, set on the M1 between junctions 14 and 15, close to attractions such as Gulliver’s Land Theme Park Resort and Go Ape Woburn. Northgate wrote: "With plenty of green space to stretch your legs or your furry friends' legs, the service station also boasts a variety of food and drink outlets to refuel."And coming in third was Fleet Services, close to LEGOLAND Windsor. Offering 26 EV charging points and 16 food and drink outlets, it has spacious facilities. It's also famous for its bright yellow piano, which encourages people to take a moment to play or listen to some music.Article continues belowThe UK’s best service stations - top 10Exeter - M5Newport Pagnell Southbound - M1Fleet - M3Wetherby - A1 (M)Cambridge - A14Cobham - M25South Mimms - M25Ferrybridge - M62Reading Westbound - M4Scotch Corner - A1 (M)Have a story you want to share?
