What happened to Croatia's last-minute goal?! That's what a lot of viewers were probably wondering when Croatia looked to have equalized against Portugal in the most dramatic fashion during their World Cup round of 32 match. But the jubilation was short-lived.Here's what happened and why the goal did not count.Gonçalo Ramos scored for Portugal in the 94th minute to make it 2-1, appearing to settle the match in Toronto on Thursday, July 2. But there was more theater to come. With 10 minutes of stoppage time on the clock, Croatia had the ball in the net in the 103rd minute off a wild goal-mouth scramble. But after a VAR review, the goal was disallowed, giving Portugal the 2-1 win and a spot in the round of 16.The call was offside. In soccer, a player is offside if they are behind the second-to-last defender when the ball touches the teammate passing to them. Now, here's where things got confusing in the Croatia vs. Portugal match. The ball bobbled around and unintentionally touched multiple players before it the shot was taken.Croatia's Ivan Perišić played a long cross from the right, which went through a crowd of players and bounced off Portugal defender Renato Veiga's head. The ball then deflected off Croatia's Mario Pašalić near the goal before it was turned home by Croatia's Joško Gvardiol.Though the goal appeared to be legit, replays showed something crucial: Croatia striker Igor Matanović got the faintest of headed touches on the ball while Pašalić was in an offside position.Portugal's touch from Veiga after it skimmed Matanović's head was not intentional, meaning players all needed to be onside when the ball touched Matanović's head. Pašalić was judged to be in an offside position at that time, negating Croatia's goal. Pašalić ran back onside toward the ball after it bounced off the Portugal player, making this replay and call extremely confusing for viewers.See a replay of the moment:USA TODAY at the 2026 World CupThe 2026 World Cup is the largest ever, and USA TODAY is going all in with reporters on the ground in all 16 host cities across three countries to cover 48 teams vying for the trophy.
