A specialist team of lawyers and researchers have handed the Australian Federal Police a 61-page brief after spending more than 12 months digging into alleged war crimes committed by an Australian man serving in Isael’s military. The brief, produced by the Australian Centre for International Justice (ACIJ), focused on the man’s actions during Israeli operations in Gaza in 2023 and 2024.First reported by The Guardian, the allegations against him included deliberately destroying residential buildings without military justification.“The pattern of conduct of the Israeli military highlighted in this complaint establishes a prima facie case that the attacks against civilian property were widespread and systematic, perpetrated in a co-ordinated and organised manner,” ACIJ’s submission said, as cited by the paper.ACIJ executive director and principal lawyer Rawan Arraf told NewsWire she was “confident the AFP will give this complaint serious consideration as it deserves”.“These are grave commonwealth offences and Australia cannot be a safe haven to those who have perpetrated international crimes,” she said.Ms Arraf said the dossier was “the first of many cases we will bring to the AFP”.A Home Affairs memo released under freedom of information laws late last year confirmed the government was aware of Australian citizens travelling “to Israel to undertake military service”.“The Department of Home Affairs and the (Australian Border Force) are aware of four Australian citizens who have travelled outside of Australia since 7 October 2023 and who were suspected to have departed Australia to serve or attempt to serve with the (Israel Defence Forces),” the letter said.“The ABF intervened with three of the four Australian citizens suspected of departing for Israel since 7 October 2023.”The war in Gaza was sparked by Hamas’ unprecedented October 7 assault on Israel in 2023.Militants from the Palestinian Islamist group killed some 1200 people in a series of massacres, with witness testimonies detailing horrific claims of torture and sexual violence.Much of the carnage was captured in videos celebrated by Hamas sympathisers on social media.Israel’s two-year campaign decimated Gaza and killed tens of thousands, including women and children. Its chokehold on humanitarian aid has also denied the civilian population of desperately needed medicine and spurred fears of famine. While a US-brokered ceasefire has tenuously held since October, some 1.2 million Palestinians remain displaced and limited military strikes continue to kill hundreds per month, according to monitors.
