England’s team hotel in Mexico is expected to have roadblocks around its perimeter to guard against pre-game disruption.Thomas Tuchel’s side take on the World Cup co-hosts in the last 16 at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City on Sunday. The move to ramp up measures around where England will stay comes after Ecuador’s time in the capital city ahead of their round-of-32 defeat by Mexico was interrupted by fans setting off fireworks, chanting and revving vehicle engines outside their hotel throughout the evening.FIFA sources briefed on the security protocols being implemented at the tournament, speaking on the condition of anonymity to protect relationships, have told The Athletic that decisions to enforce roadblocks around a team’s hotel are made on a case-by-case basis. There is also likely to be an element of FIFA learning from past experiences and wanting to avoid a repeat.England are due to travel to Mexico City two days before the game, a different approach to what they have done throughout the World Cup so far.FIFA’s tournament regulations state that national teams must be in the city they are playing in at least one day before the match, although they can travel two days before if they want to.Until now, England had been arriving one day before their fixtures.Sunday’s game will be played at altitude with Estadio Azteca sitting 2,240 metres (7,350 feet) above sea level. That puts it in FIFA’s moderate-altitude category, where, as The Athletic reported earlier on Thursday, physiological demands become more significant and preparation decisions are key.“We will go one night earlier. It makes sense. The ball will fly differently. It will fly maybe five yards more. It’s just difficult. We just need the experience,” Tuchel said.“The recommendation is you either go ten days before — which is too long for us — or last minute, which is not allowed. We have spoken to teams who do it and they say they travel very, very late on match day if they can’t, have time to adapt (and) find a mixture in between. It will stay as a disadvantage.”
