The pan-Yoruba socio-political association, Afenifere, has called on the National Assembly and the state houses of assembly to place policing on the concurrent list of the Nigerian Constitution.

The group, which congratulated the Federal Government under President Bola Tinubu on sending the bill on the establishment of state police to the National Assembly, which would be transmitted to state houses of assembly, said the development was good for the nation’s security system.

This was contained in a communique issued by the National Publicity Secretary of the group, Mr Jare Ajayi, on Thursday, after a caucus meeting held at the residence of the national leader of the group, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

According to the communique, the body also lauded the legislature for “wanting to pass the bill expeditiously.” Afenifere, however, observed that there were some areas in the bill that needed to be reviewed, saying there was a need for review on the areas in the bill that tended to make the proposed state police appendages of the federal government.

The communique read, “In other words, there are clauses in the bill that tend to strengthen the stronghold of the Federal Government on state police rather than liberalising it.
