The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS) at UC Berkeley is pleased to announce that Professor Ana Arias has officially assumed the role of Department Chair. Arias succeeds Jelani Nelson, who is stepping down to take an industrial leave of absence.
The department takes this opportunity to express its deepest gratitude to Professor Nelson for his dedicated leadership over the past two years, during which he served sequentially as Chair of the Computer Science Division and then as the overall EECS Department Chair.
Numerous contributions and achievements were realized under his stewardship. Notably, Professor Nelson successfully brought the faculty promotion and advancement cases within the CS Division up to date and served as a strong advocate for the instructional resources necessary to support the department’s core educational mission. Furthermore, he worked closely with faculty and staff to plan the highly complex relocation of the CS Division from Soda Hall to the new Barbara and Gerson Bakar Gateway building. This major undertaking will shape the future of EECS for years to come.
Please join the EECS community in thanking Jelani Nelson for his impactful service and in offering a warm welcome to Ana Arias as she assumes the role of department chair and guides the department into its next chapter of academic and research excellence.
