Consumer companies fell, trimming gains for the week, amid concerns about stock-market and labor-market stability.
The sector initially gained after a tepid June jobs report alleviated fears about Federal Reserve rate plans.
Some brokerages said a down-tick in the unemployment rate suggested the report gave more a mixed impression of the labor market.
"The June employment report should ease concerns about an overheating labor market, though job growth and wage gains remain firm enough to keep the Fed focused on inflation risks," said strategists at the UBS chief investment office.
