Cape Verde, an island nation off the west coast of Africa that qualified for the World Cup for the first time this year, is scheduled to face Argentina tomorrow in the knockout stage of the tournament.“The purpose of this curfew is to protect public safety, reduce criminal activity associated with post-game celebrations, and enable police, fire and emergency personnel to effectively maintain order and respond to emergencies,” Rodrigues said. The curfew will run from 10 p.m. tomorrow until 5 a.m. Saturday in parts of Brockton, where thousands of people have gathered after Cape Verde’s World Cup matches, pouring into downtown streets waving flags, dancing and celebrating late into the night. Is the ball to blame? There’s a mystery at this year’s World Cup: Why so many goals? The 2026 tournament has the highest rate of goals per match in decades and is the first in World Cup history to have scored more than 200 goals (with two dozen matches still left to play). That, in part, is due to an expanded new format that has offered more teams the chance to compete and, possibly, rack up goals. In a game not known for high scores, the pace of goals in this World Cup has left some fans scratching their heads.2h ago / 1:15 PM EDTSenegal’s exit from World Cup highlights rifts Recriminations are expected to follow swiftly after Senegal’s calamitous exit from the World Cup, with a schism apparent in the squad after they lost to Belgium in Seattle on Wednesday. The future of coach Pape Bouna Thiaw, who is banned for the first five matches of Senegal’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which begins in September, is in doubt after they let slip a 2-0 lead against Belgium to be catapulted out of the tournament.Senegal were five minutes from a place in the last 16 when they allowed Belgium back into the game, and lost 3-2 in extra time after a last-gasp VAR penalty decision went against them.Influential midfielder Pape Gueye said he would no longer play under Thiaw, posting on social media: “I’ll come back later to say a few words about our elimination. But today I announce that, as long as this coaching staff remains in charge, I will take a break from the national team.”Gueye was surprisingly benched for their previous game against Iraq in Toronto last Friday but came on to score twice. He was restored to the starting lineup against Belgium, but was taken off midway through the second half.3h ago / 1:01 PM EDTBloodied Tillman sees a dream come trueBlood pooled near Malik Tillman’s toes as he stood over a free kick last night. The U.S. midfielder’s boot had been stepped on and split open during the World Cup’s round of 32 match against Bosnia-Herzegovina. The puncture left a hole in his sock between his big and middle toes, where a red stain formed. But the 82nd minute of a knockout game, with the U.S. clinging to a 1-0 lead and down to 10 men after a controversial red card sent off scoring star Folarin Balogun, was not the time for Tillman to focus on the pain.“I’ve been dreaming about this game,” Tillman said. “I’ve been dreaming about maybe taking a free kick and scoring a free kick.”4h ago / 12:13 PM EDTGolazo de Malik Tillman y Estados Unidos aumenta la ventaja sobre a Bosnia y Herzegovina Con un toque sutil en un cobro de una falta en los linderos del área, supera a la barrera y vence al portero bosnio, para marcar el segundo del equipo de las Barras y las Estrellas.4h ago / 12:13 PM EDTLamine Yamal is game's future, and presentOnce described by French legend Thierry Henry as being “ahead of the game,” Lamine Yamal is a rising superstar of the sport and is widely considered to be the future Lionel Messi. The 18-year-old has already won three La Liga titles with FC Barcelona, a Spanish Cup, a Spanish Super Cup and a Euros championship in addition to being a Ballon d’Or runner-up. It isn’t just the statistics that make Yamal a superstar — though it certainly doesn’t hurt to be one of La Liga’s top scorers. The teenage phenom is able to complement his obvious technical skills with a flair and maturity in high-pressure situations that is well beyond his years. Spanish national team manager Luis de la Fuente described Yamal earlier this year as being one of those players whom you watch and think that he’s “touched by magic.” It’s an aspect of the game that cannot be described in words but can be felt whenever that athlete gets a touch on the ball. Yamal is most likely your favorite player’s favorite player to watch, to steal a somewhat corny adage. Yamal was born in Spain to a Moroccan father and a mother from Equatorial Guinea. He said he chose to play for the Spanish national team because he wanted to compete in European championships. This summer will be his first World Cup appearance and he’s coming in riding high after Barcelona won its second consecutive La Liga title a few weeks ago. He’s expected to arrive after a pause in his club play after a hamstring injury sidelined him for more than a month, though Barcelona’s management has predicted that he will be in shape in time for the tournament.Spanish fans are putting a lot of hope on Yamal as the national team has failed to make it past the round of 16 since winning the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
