Actress Judy Garland, railroad executive Harold S. Vanderbilt, and composer Cole Porter have at least one thing in common: They were guests at Rock Edge, a storied estate in Prides Crossing, an affluent seaside enclave along Massachusetts‘ North Shore known for its grand waterfront mansions.

Perched atop a rocky bluff, the three-acre property commands roughly 400 feet of shoreline with sweeping ocean views. At its center is a Georgian Revival mansion built in 1904 that pairs Gilded Age grandeur with thoughtfully integrated modern comforts. A private guest wing and separate carriage house bring the estate to 13 bedrooms and 14 bathrooms (plus four powder rooms) across roughly 27,300 square feet of living space. An expansive motor court provides parking for at least 17 vehicles.

The formal dining room features one of 14 fireplaces in the house.

The residence was commissioned by wealthy Bostonian Marion Sargent but is most notably associated with her sister, International Tennis Hall of Fame inductee and socialite Eleanora Sears, who regularly hosted her famous friends and lived at Rock Edge until her death in 1968. Prior to its $20.5 million listing in June 2022, the then-owner—who had reportedly grown up in the house—had it redesigned by Linda Zarifi of Zarifi Design. The property sold for $18.27 million in March 2023, marking the highest sale price ever recorded in Beverly and the second most expensive home sale north of Boston.
