Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar on Thursday said that street vendors being removed from major roads as part of the ‘Safe Footpath’ campaign would be accommodated in notified vending zones.“I had discussed the issue with legislators from Opposition parties when I was the Deputy Chief Minister. They had also agreed, and this is a decision based on consensus. Footpaths are important for pedestrians too. There is a Supreme Court ruling on the issue as well,” he said.Assuring that the interests of the vendors would be taken care of, he said that about 37,000 vendors had applied for vendor carts and about 60,000 persons had applied for vending machines. “We need about ₹50 crore to ₹60 crore. We have the money. Subsidies will also be extended to the needy.” As the citywide footpath clearance drive entered its second day, Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda also maintained that the exercise is not aimed at evicting street vendors but at relocating them from arterial and sub-arterial roads to ward roads where they can continue their business.On Day 2, the drive continued to target shops, pushcarts, temporary sheds, advertisement boards, ramps, construction debris and obstructions occupying pedestrian space. The East City Corporation cleared 8.8 km of footpaths, while the Central City Corporation removed encroachments along 8.55 km of footpaths covering 11 roads. The Bengaluru North City Corporation cleared another 12.7 km of footpaths, removing 25 shops, 124 pushcarts, 59 canopies, 130 unauthorised advertisement boards, four temporary structures, besides 18 tonnes of debris and waste.
