The French navy has intercepted a sanctioned oil tanker in the Mediterranean in a high-stakes operation working with British intelligence to target Russia’s shadow fleet.
France’s navy intercepted the vessel, named the Grinch, on Thursday morning, French officials said.
Defence Secretary John Healey said the UK had provided support to France by tracking the vessel, including patrol vessel HMS Dagger monitoring it through the Straits of Gibraltar.
The ship had been sailing from Russia, was suspected of operating with a false flag, and was subject to international sanctions, French President Emmanuel Macron said.
