PHOENIX — Between now and the trade deadline on Aug. 3, the San Francisco Giants front office will engage in plenty of thought exercises, hypothetical debates and brainstorming sessions as they determine how to position themselves for a less painful experience next season. They’ll surely take calls on impending free agents Luis Arraez, Robbie Ray and Tyler Mahle. They’re less likely to create meaningful dialogue around shipping off Rafael Devers or Willy Adames, two highly priced and underperforming star players, even though that shouldn’t stop them from trying. Then there are all the players in between. Recall that the Giants didn’t stop at trading impending free agents Tyler Rogers and Mike Yastrzemski at last year’s deadline. President of baseball operations Buster Posey also obtained a prospect package from the New York Yankees for former All-Star closer Camilo Doval, who had two-plus years of club control.Could the Giants land on outfielder Heliot Ramos as this year’s version of Doval? If it’s a notion worth entertaining for more than a heartbeat, then the fifth inning of the Giants’ 6-4 win over the Diamondbacks at Arizona’s Chase Field Wednesday night offered a point and a potential counterpoint. The point: Ramos led off the inning with a home run that left the bat at 110.7 mph and soared into the angular section of left field seats nearest to the 413-foot marker. Two batters later, the potential counterpoint: Rookie outfielder Victor Bericoto hit a two-run home run that landed a few peanut shells away in the same section.
Giants finally beat Diamondbacks, and Heliot Ramos gives them plenty to consider
Ramos, who homered in the win, could bring a lot back in a trade, but also fits the profile of the type of player the Giants value.
