Today’s the day. Or is it tomorrow? It’s apparently true that New York’s Madison Square Garden arena has been booked for a private event from today, Thursday, through to midday on Saturday, July 4th. The canines in the New York streets will tell you that this is to facilitate the wedding between the world’s most famous pop star, billionaire Taylor Swift, and her fiance, three-time Super Bowl winner, Travis Kelce. Or is it? Is the booking of the landmark space, usually reserved for concerts (Swift herself has performed here) or sporting events, an expensive canard designed to distract, or the real venue for their wedding? Roads are being blocked off, security and police are on standby, and trucks have been delivering unseen items to the garden. At this stage of proceedings, it seems true that Swift and Kelce will host some kind of shindig here. At this late date at least, no rumours have emerged about any other venue. And boy have people been trying hard to find out where the celebrations are to take place. The New York Times reported on Thursday morning that it has allocated a staggering two dozen reporters and editors to cover the purported wedding, “with many more around the newsroom contributing tips”.Although a windowless, covered space may seem a weird choice for most people’s wedding, Swift is not Most People. Privacy, security and safety will be the couple’s priority beyond pretty much anything else. Those accessing the area can do so privately, through a range of entrances that facilitate vehicles allowing no drone, helicopter, or randomer to sneak illicit overhead pictures of the gathering. The couple themselves have said zero about their wedding, and nor should they have to. It’s entirely possible they have already got formally hitched somewhere else in the world prior to showing up at Madison Square Garden. It may be none of our business, but a lot of people have made it their business to be deeply engaged with the upcoming nuptials. So Madison Square Garden is booked, and apparently a gathering for 100 is expected there tonight, and then another for 1,000 people tomorrow, Friday, July 3rd. We can assume the July 4th booking till noon is to dismantle whatever has been constructed at the venue – a ‘castle’ has been among the rumours – but the truth is there are almost zero hard facts. It’s all speculation so far.The fact we know so little is either a genuine tribute to the discretion of all invited and involved, or a deep fear of the consequences of the NDA everyone will certainly have had to sign in advance. Any pictures likely toemerge from the gatherings will only come with the couple’s sign-off.So who’s going? It’s safe to say the Swift and Kelce families will both be there in force. And whichever pals are in favour at present. Definitely Abigail Anderson, Swift’s longtime friend from school. Probably all of Kelce’s NFL teammates from the Kansas City Chiefs. Maybe Stevie Nicks. Maybe Tim McGraw. Selena Gomez. The Hadid sisters. Ed and Cherry Sheeran. Graham Norton? He has joked on air about asking for an invitation, but doubled down when publicly asked to confirm if he had actually received a golden ticket. Every buzzy name in high fashion has been bandied about, especially those designers whose clothes she has recently worn. Northern Irish Jonathan Anderson of Dior. Daniel Roseberry of Schiaparelli. Stella McCartney. She will probably wear more than one gúna over the two days. Will there be pictures? Again, who knows? We do know from one indiscreet guest, NFL player George Kittle, that the couple have stressed a “No Gifts” policy. Kittle is probably off the list now, and so won’t get to give Kelce the “old coin” he was planning on getting him, because Kelce apparently likes old coins. As a multimillionaire about to wed a billionaire, actual coin is one thing Kelce doesn’t lack.Four Irish gifts for the couple who have everything:A hurley and sliotar for sportsman Kelce. There’s probably no sport he couldn’t play well, given some quick training by a GAA specialist. An Irish wolfhound, for Swift’s cats, Olivia, Meredith and Benjamin Button to gang up on. A SuperValu reusable shopping bag. If it was good enough for actor Matt Damon to tote his wet togs around Dalkey, it’s good enough for Taylor to use when popping out to the store.
