Everton have completed the signing of midfielder Hayden Hackney from Championship side Middlesbrough, with the 24-year-old penning a five-year contract. The Premier League club confirmed the deal on Thursday.While the transfer fee was not officially disclosed, British media reports indicate the agreement is worth approximately £16.5 million, with additional add-ons. Hackney marks manager David Moyes' first acquisition of the summer window, following an impressive 2025-26 campaign for Middlesbrough.Hackney was recognised for his outstanding performances by being named the Championship Player of the Season. He captained Middlesbrough throughout the season, making 41 appearances across all competitions.Speaking about his move, Hackney highlighted the influence of his new manager. "Hopefully I can be the next one to do it successfully for Everton." Middlesbrough narrowly missed out on promotion to the top flight, losing to Hull City in the Championship play-off final at Wembley in May.Everton will hope Hackney can help the club reach the next level after a disappointing end to the 2025-26 season.The Toffees were in European contention for the majority of the campaign, but a dismal run-in saw them finish down in 13th place.They also exited both domestic cup competitions early, and the Merseyside club are still waiting for their first piece of silverware since the 1995 FA Cup.Everton are due to get their pre-season underway ahead of their first match against Dundee on 18 July. They also have friendlies lined up against Bolton, Stoke City and Newcastle among others.They will then begin their Premier League season with a home match against Crystal Palace, while they are also scheduled to face Manchester United and Tottenham in their opening four fixtures.
