ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Kyle Whittingham’s tenure at Michigan will be judged in part by his ability to compete with Indiana and Ohio State, two programs that have moved ahead of the Wolverines in the Big Ten hierarchy.Wednesday, Whittingham got a two-pronged victory against the Buckeyes and Hoosiers by landing a commitment from four-star cornerback Monsanna Torbert, the No. 97 player in the Rivals industry rankings. Torbert, who will play his senior season at Princeton High School in Cincinnati, decommitted from Indiana in May, setting up a Michigan-Ohio State battle that went down to the wire.“I chose Michigan because the staff made the place feel like home,” Torbert said during his announcement, noting his Cincinnati connections with assistant coach Kerry Coombs and running back Jordan Marshall. “The Cincinnati guys are showing it’s different at Michigan. It’s like no school in the country.”Torbert has been a steady riser in the recruiting rankings, climbing from the mid-300s earlier this year to his current spot in the top 100. Though most of his high school highlights are at quarterback and safety, he’s established himself as one of the elite cornerback prospects in his class, not merely an athlete without a position.Landing Torbert eases the sting of missing out on five-star cornerback Joshua Dobson, who committed to South Carolina on Wednesday. Dobson visited Michigan in June, but Torbert emerged as the priority to round out Michigan’s class at cornerback.Michigan’s 2027 class stands at No. 10 in the Rivals industry rankings after Torbert’s commitment. Torbert is the highest-rated defensive player in Michigan’s class and the No. 2 prospect overall behind wide receiver Quentin Burrell. With 20 commitments, the Wolverines are heading into July with the bulk of their class in place and a handful of spots remaining for players who fit specific needs.
