World Cup 2026 viewers were left doing a double take as England prepared to take on DR Congo09:36, 02 Jul 2026Updated 09:37, 02 Jul 2026Viewers of the World Cup 2026 were left speechless during England's knockout match. All eyes were on Atlanta on Wednesday (July 1) as England took on the Democratic Republic of Congo in their round of 32 match at the FIFA World Cup.England came through Group L unbeaten, following wins against Croatia and Panama, and a goalless draw with Ghana, but had notably fallen short of the sort of performances needed if they are to progress deep into the competition. The worry continued when Brian Cipenga scored for DR Congo just seven minutes into yesterday's knockout match. After a tense 70 minutes, Harry Kane came to England's rescue to bring the teams level, before rifling home a stunning 86th-minute winner to complete the comeback. However, viewers were already distracted before the match had even gotten underway.During the BBC's build-up coverage, reporter Kelly Somers caught up with commentator Alan Shearer on the pitch at the Atlanta Stadium.Speaking about the conditions in the stadium, Alan said: "England have got a little bit lucky up to now, that may change if they win today and they go through on Sunday with the altitude."But up to now, twice it's been tipping it down and twice they've been in conditioned stadiums, so not too bad for them at the minute."BBC viewers were quickly left confused as they noticed a striking resemblance between Kelly and Alan and iconic EastEnders couple Tanya and Max Branning (played by Jo Joyner and Jake Wood).Tanya and Max are one of the most famous and turbulent couples in the history of the BBC soap. Their relationship, which anchored the show from 2006 to 2018, faced numerous troubles, including Max's affair with Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner) and Tanya burying Max alive.Sharing a photo of Kelly and Alan on X (formerly Twitter), one person wrote: "Thought that was Tanya and Max Branning ffs."Another added: "Teehee. Great shout, can't believe I've never noticed Somers-Joyner alike before," while a third said: "OMG I knew she looked familiar."Article continues belowA fourth fan joked: "Does Stacey know? I feel she should be told," with someone else sharing: "I thought it was just me who thought she looked like Tanya."Another commented: "That's the biggest win of the day!" while a seventh viewer wrote: "Looks like she's back with Max there!"Coverage of the World Cup 2026 airs on the BBC and ITV, while EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and is available to stream on BBC iPlayer from 6am
