Stockholm’s Patent and Market Court has ordered Google to pay Klarna nearly $2 billion (£1.51bn) after the search provider preferenced its own price-comparison services in results over more than a decade.

The payout involves a total of 14.3bn Swedish kronor (€1.29bn, $1.47bn, £1.11bn) plus interest, for a total of €1.7bn ($1.93bn, £1.46bn).

It relates to Google’s actions in the markets where Klarna’s PriceRunner service operates in the UK, Sweden and Denmark from 2008 to 2023.

Decade of abuse

“PriceRunner is considered to have suffered damage as a result of Google having illegally favoured its price comparison service for many years,” the court said on Wednesday.
