Puducherry MLAs belonging to the Dravida Munntera Kazhagam (DMK), on Thursday (July 2, 2026), staged a sit-in protest at the Legislative Assembly to condemn the AINRC-BJP government for the delay in electing the Assembly Speaker and allocating portfolios to Ministers. The five DMK legislators, led by party’s legislature wing leader A.M.H. Nazeem, holding placards, gathered near the portico of the Assembly and raised slogans demanding answers from the government on the election of Speaker and portfolio allocation.Mr. Nazeem later told reporters that the Assembly election results were announced on May 4. The other four States that went to elections along with Puducherry have started functioning normally. Those States have convened Assembly sessions and passed their annual Budgets, he said.“But, Puducherry is yet to have a Speaker. Portfolios are not yet allotted to the five Ministers. Nobody knows what is happening. The Lt. Governor and Chief Minister should explain to the public the real reason for the delay,” Mr. Nazeem said. The DMK, he said believes that Chief Minister has a right to decide on the Speaker and portfolios as his party, the AIRNC, has won 12 seats, compared to BJP’s 4 in the National Democratic Alliance during the 2026 Assembly polls. “However, it is an internal matter of BJP and AINRC. As legislators, we want the Speaker election to be held fast and portfolios allocated,” he added. Published - July 02, 2026 12:51 pm IST
