President Donald Trump on Wednesday made a claim that lit up social media, given how unlikely it seemed. Except this one was ― sort of ― true. Trump bragged that he had a conversation with President Teddy Roosevelt, which seemed unlikely given that the 26th president died in 1919 and Trump wasn’t even born until 1946. But earlier in the day, Trump visited the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library in North Dakota, which is opening this weekend and features an interactive AI projection of the former president. And, he had a chat with the Roose-bot: Trump spoke about the experience during a speech later in the day. “I even had a conversation with Theodore Roosevelt,” Trump said. “I said, ‘What did you think about the Panama Canal? Do you consider that your greatest achievement?’” Naturally, Trump had to use his moment with the AI Teddy to take some digs at Democrats.“How do you feel about the fact that the Democrats gave the Panama Canal away to Panama for $1?” he asked. The Panama Canal was returned to Panama in 1999 as the result of a treaty signed in 1977 by President Jimmy Carter and ratified by the Senate on a bipartisan basis. But it’s long been a sore spot for Trump, who has called the fees collected by Panama “a complete rip-off,” and said he may “demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us” if his conditions aren’t met.
