This renewed sense of national pride is linked to actions by Donald Trump, including his threat to make Canada the 51st state and the imposition of tariffs on Canadian exports. Trump had previously suggested acquiring Canada, and in February 2025, he signed an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on imports from Canada, prompting retaliatory tariffs from Canada. The US Supreme Court later ruled that tariffs imposed under the 1977 International Emergency Economic Powers Act, which Trump used, were unconstitutional.
