Newcastle United have agreed a fee that will reach £100m with Tottenham Hotspur for Sandro Tonali – and will reinvest the entire amount in strengthening in multiple positions with “high potential” talent.

Newcastle know they need to get back on the front foot after losing a second high-profile player this summer, with Tonali following Anthony Gordon out of the exit door as the club raise nearly £200m in sales.

The initial fee for Tonali is £92.5m but there are “easily achievable” extras which will take the fee closer to £100m by the end of the season.

Tonali ‘had to go’

It means a key member of Eddie Howe’s squad has left but internally there had long been a resignation about Tonali’s exit, with the player keen to leave and desperate to move to Spurs – who will increase his weekly wage to £275,000-a-week.
