Bottom Line Up Front

Today’s verdict: The Riviera Maya is fighting a record sargassum season — nearly 73,000 tonnes cleared statewide, a third of it at Playa del Carmen — as Peru prepares to proclaim its first woman president on Friday and Mexico draw England at the Azteca in the last 16.

A record sargassum season. Quintana Roo has cleared nearly 73,000 tonnes of seaweed statewide through late June, its biggest cleanup on record. Playa del Carmen accounts for about a third, though several Cancún beaches remain clear.

Peru’s proclamation Friday. The electoral board will formally proclaim Keiko Fujimori, Peru’s first elected woman president, on July 3. Nothing changes for residents before the July 28 handover.

Mexico draw England at the Azteca. Mexico’s last-16 tie is against England on Monday, after both won their Round-of-32 matches. Argentina and Colombia close the regional first round on Friday.
