Former England captain Ben Stokes waves goodbye after his last Test.
"I will probably never play like that again in my life."
These were Ben Stokes' comments after his utterly outrageous 258 from 198 balls against the Proteas on the second day of the 2016 New Year Test at Newlands.
I had the privilege of watching every ball from the vantage point of the Newlands Media Centre, right behind the bowler's arm at the Kelvin Grove End.
It was indeed an innings for the ages — a thunderous display of clinical ball-striking that had not been seen in these parts. Each of his 30 boundaries thundered into the advertising boards, and every one of the 11 sixes drew a gasp of admiration as it sailed into the stands.
