Belgium produced a remarkable late comeback to defeat Senegal 3-2 after extra time and secure a place in the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup on Wednesday.

Youri Tielemans converted a controversial penalty in the 125th minute to complete the turnaround after Belgium had trailed 2-0 with only four minutes of regulation time remaining.

Senegal looked set for a historic victory after goals from Habib Diarra and Ismaila Sarr gave the African side a commanding lead in Seattle.

Diarra opened the scoring after reacting quickest to a rebound when Sarr’s header from Sadio Mane’s cross struck the post, while Sarr doubled Senegal’s advantage early in the second half after controlling Moussa Niakhate’s long pass before firing past Thibaut Courtois.
