CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The Pittsburgh Penguins’ plan remains a little difficult to understand.Management has repeatedly said it’d like the Penguins to get younger and, while that has generally been the case over the past year, Wednesday’s opening of NHL unrestricted free agency didn’t move the team in that direction. Then again, that is the nature of making moves on July 1. Generally, older players are available on the open market.Still, there appear to be more questions than answers after the first few hours of the free-agency period. Here’s what I’m seeing and hearing:Ten observations • The Penguins have a lot of forwards on their roster. We’ll break down the moves in a minute, but here’s an early look at what the lines could look like in September:Left wingCenterRight wingRickard RakellSidney CrosbyBryan RustEgor ChinakhovTommy NovakEvgeni MalkinAndrei KuzmenkoBen KindelNick RobertsonConnor DewarBlake LizotteElmer SöderblomThere are also a couple of players the Penguins just traded for, Hendrix Lapierre and David Gustafsson, to go along with Justin Brazeau, who remains on the roster. That’s 15 players. Maybe Gustafsson isn’t good enough to stick around. Fine. That’s still 14 forwards. You may have noticed that I haven’t yet mentioned Rutger McGroarty or Avery Hayes. Obviously, they need to earn their spots in the NHL lineup come September. But shouldn’t they be given every opportunity to do so?Having depth is great. This seems like an excessive amount of depth.Either someone is getting traded, or the Penguins have lost a little bit of faith in some of their AHL forwards.• The Penguins still absolutely want to trade for Jason Robertson. This isn’t a state secret at this point. Penguins president/GM Kyle Dubas has long fancied him. Dubas even traded for his brother today.I sense that the Penguins have made what they believe to be a fair offer. Dallas seems to be holding up the proceedings because the Stars would prefer to keep Robertson. The money he is demanding, however, is making it more likely that he will be dealt.Penguins assistant GM Jason Spezza, when asked about the team’s current roster, reminded everyone that the season doesn’t start for three months. It’s a good reminder for potential trades, too.• The Penguins are clearly trying to replicate last year’s success in free agency.Spezza even said that defenseman Declan Carlile, signed for two years at a $1.5 million average annual value, is an adequate replacement for Ryan Shea. Carlile profiles a good bit like Parker Wotherspoon, who signed on a cheap deal with Pittsburgh on July 1 of last year.
As Penguins open free agency, is Jason Robertson still a possibility?: 10 observations
The Penguins are still hoping to acquire Robertson but made a number of other moves on Wednesday — including trading for Robertson's brother
