Stuart Skinner is joining his third team in the past few months. After being traded from his hometown Edmonton Oilers to the Pittsburgh Penguins in December, Skinner has signed a two-year, $3.75 million AAV deal with the Winnipeg Jets, the team announced Wednesday. The Penguins had interest in retaining the 27-year-old goaltender, but given their wealth of young goaltending, they didn’t feel comfortable offering Skinner a long-term contract. While Skinner’s numbers in Pittsburgh were modest — he had a 12-9-5 record with a 2.99 goals-against average and an .885 save percentage — he instantly became a beloved teammate. Given that locker-room impact, the Penguins would have enjoyed having him around their young goaltenders for another year. They couldn’t commit to anything beyond a year, though, and given the league’s goaltending issues, it became clear Skinner would receive more money and term elsewhere.Skinner made quite a name for himself before he arrived in Pittsburgh. The Edmonton native twice led the Oilers to the doorstep of a championship, only to fall to the Florida Panthers on both occasions. He played extremely well during the 2024 postseason but fell 2-1 in Game 7 in Florida. His play slipped during the 2025 playoffs.

If Hellebuyck were likely to stay, Winnipeg's simplest move would have been to sign his longtime backup, Eric Comrie.
