BOSTON — Somewhat overshadowed in the midst of Tuesday’s benches-clearing incident with the Washington Nationals was Boston Red Sox starter Connelly Early exiting in the fourth inning with an elbow injury. One day later, the Red Sox placed Early, one of their top young starters, on the injured list with left elbow inflammation. The 24-year-old was set for an MRI on Wednesday morning and the Red Sox are hopeful they will have more clarity on the severity of the injury after the game. Regardless, with team off days on Thursday and Monday and the All-Star break looming, interim manager Chad Tracy said it didn’t make sense to push Early, even if the injury is not severe.“He’s feeling better today but it’s still a little sore, so with one more start remaining prior to the All-Star break — it’s not just the start, it’s like, are we going to have this guy go out in two days and throw a side session?” Tracy explained. “That’s an easy decision to make sure you take that out of his hands and do right by him.” The Red Sox’s scheduled starters for their weekend series in Anaheim are Jake Bennett, Sonny Gray and Ranger Suárez. The club then heads to Chicago to face the White Sox for a series beginning on Tuesday before a three-game series against the New York Mets leading into the break. Given the off days, the next time the Red Sox will need a fifth starter is Saturday, July 11.Tracy named two potential options for that start: Patrick Sandoval and Brayan Bello.
