The Trump administration on Tuesday announced a limited-edition Social Security card it is making available for babies born during the United States semiquincentennial. The special card features the phrase “Freedom 250,” marking the recipient’s birth during the nation’s 250th year. They will be available only for a few million babies born in a six-month window between July 2 and December 31, 2026. The cards are identical in function to a standard Social Security card. “Freedom 250 is a celebration of America’s storied history and the monumental moments that have shaped our nation, including the creation of Social Security over 90 years ago,” Social Security Administration Commissioner Frank Bisignano said. “The next generation of Americans born during this historic year will receive limited-edition Social Security cards bearing the Freedom 250 logo. Under the leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we are strengthening Social Security, improving service, and building an SSA to serve Americans today and in the future.”

The limited editions will be produced at no additional cost to families or taxpayers, according to SSA. They will automatically be issued through the agency’s Enumeration at Birth program, which allows parents to request a Social Security number while completing birth registration paperwork at hospitals, birthing centers, or through licensed midwives. The roll-out is among a myriad of initiatives officials have planned to commemorate the country’s 250th anniversary throughout 2026. In Washington, D.C., those celebrations are moving into high gear this summer, with July 4 shaping up to be a landmark event in the capital. The Great American State Fair will be in full swing on the National Mall for the holiday, while the public can watch what is projected to be the biggest fireworks show in the world from the grounds that evening. America250, the organization Congress created to honor the milestone, is also leading initiatives, including what is aimed at creating the largest volunteer effort in the country’s history. The group has recorded over 13 million volunteer hours so far. It is also encouraging citizens to make July 4 a “giving” holiday, saying it hopes to end a trend of charitable giving that has “long been concentrated in the last weeks of December, leaving nonprofits under-resourced for most of the year.”
