The latest figures highlight the growing frequency and intensity of extreme weather events across Europe, as scientists continue to warn that rising global temperatures are increasing the likelihood of prolonged and deadly heatwaves.

Spain has recorded its hottest first six months since weather records began, with authorities confirming that more than 1000 people died from heat-related causes during the recent extreme heatwave that swept across Europe.

According to Spain's Carlos III Health Institute, at least 1028 deaths were linked to the intense heat, underscoring the devastating human impact of the prolonged high temperatures that affected much of the continent.

The latest death toll is more than double the 407 heat-related fatalities recorded in June 2025, which had previously been recognised as Spain's hottest June since records began, according to the country's national weather agency, Aemet.

Providing an update on Wednesday, Aemet said the first half of 2026 was unprecedented in terms of temperature, with average readings standing 1.6 degrees Celsius above normal levels.
