Citing the dangerous structure of a bus shelter, Periyakarpoorampatti residents in Melur taluk have urged the Madurai district administration to build a new passenger shelter.Located in Kambur panchayat of Kottampatti union, the current passenger shelter is in a state of disrepair. The roof of the building has partially collapsed, leaving the internal iron reinforcement rods exposed to the elements.Further, chunks of cement plaster frequently breaks off and falls from the ceiling and walls, posing an immediate physical threat to anyone standing nearby, said a resident named Alaguraja.Despite the evident risks, school-going children and local commuters are forced to use this dilapidated shelter daily while waiting for public transport.“With no alternative seating or cover available in the area, villagers, especially students and elderly people, often sit beneath the crumbling structure, unaware of when a major collapse might occur,” he noted.Highlighting the gravity of the situation, local residents have collectively urged authorities to intervene before a major accident takes place. As the structure remains in the sorry state for more than three years, the bus shelter must immediately be renovated, said Mr. Alaguraja.
