A 60-year old man was arrested by SIPCOT police on Wednesday for allegedly setting his son on fire and killing him after the latter reportedly came home under the influence of alcohol and created a problem.According to police, the deceased was identified as T. Arul Raj, 32, from Madathur. Police added that Arul Raj was addicted to alcohol and had repeatedly picked quarrels at home and caused public disturbances. He had reportedly been warned by the police on several occasions.However on Tuesday night, Arul Raj returned home in an inebriated state and quarreled with his mother and assaulted her. When his father Thalamuthu, 62, intervened he too was allegedly attacked leading to an altercation between two.Police said Arul Raj was subsequently pushed out of his house and the door was locked. Investigators alleged that Thalamuthur later came outside and poured a mixture of kerosene and thinner on his son and set him on fire in the early hours of Wednesday.Arul Raj suffered severe burn injuries and died on the spot.Upon receiving information SIPCOT police rushed to the spot, the body was recovered and sent for postmortem examination at Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital.A case has been registered and Thalamuthu was arrested.
